2009 PPNYC Voter Guide Launched
The Planned Parenthood of New York City Action Fund (PPNYC Action Fund) has released its first-ever City-Wide Voter Guide for the upcoming local New York City Elections. The guide was launched today, available at www.ppnycaction.org, and also marks the first time the group has endorsed candidates in local New York City elections.
“In a City like New York, voters are often surprised to learn that their local candidates are anti-choice, or oppose things as basic as clinic access or sex education,” said Joan Malin of the PPNYC Action Fund. “We want to make sure that voters are making informed decisions when they get to the ballot box.”
The PPNYC Action Fund’s Voter guide, available online at www.ppnycaction.org, is easy to use. Users can look up their representatives by zip code or voting district and see if they’re rated as “Pro-Choice”, “Mixed”,” Anti-Choice” or “Unresponsive”. Ratings are based on a twelve-question form that determines candidates’ support for issues ranging to access to abortion, health care services, doctor training, emergency contraception, sex education and teens’ health and safety.
“New Yorkers would be surprised to learn how many candidates, including front-runners, returned Anti-Choice questionnaires, Mixed questionnaires, or even refused to complete the questionnaire at all,” said Malin. “The candidates who win the upcoming elections will make important decisions that affect New Yorkers, such as access to health care, contraception, cancer screenings, and whether or not our kids are taught sex education. Voters deserve to know where their candidates stand on these issues.”
While this guide is the first produced for city elections, the PPNYC Action Fund puts out a state-wide voter guide every election cycle. Its release comes in conjunction with a host of new media tools for PPNYC Action Fund supporters, including a brand new Twitter(www.twitter.com/ppnycaf) account and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Planned-Parenthood-of-New-York-City-Action-Fund/200643330439) Fan page.
The full list of candidates who have been endorsed by the PPNYC Action Fund is available at www.ppnycaction.org.
