Women Applaud Johnson's Victory in State Senate
Albany, NY (February 7, 2007)–Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York (PPANY) cheered the election of Craig Johnson to represent New York’s 7th Senate District in Nassau County.
“This is a great day for the women of New York,” said JoAnn M. Smith of Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York. “We have elected a pro-choice candidate committed to women’s health and rights. Craig Johnson will be an important vote in the Senate to protect and expand access to health care for all New Yorkers. Planned Parenthood Advocates is proud of the work we have done to achieve the success that we are all enjoying today.”
Craig Johnson was elected in the February 6 special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by Michael Balboni when he was appointed to serve as Governor Eliot Spitzer’s deputy secretary for public safety. Johnson’s clearly articulated support for a woman’s right to choose earned him the backing of reproductive rights advocates.
“We were thrilled to endorse Craig Johnson and are even more thrilled that our efforts on his behalf helped elect Craig to the New York State Senate last night,” said JoAnn D. Smith, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Nassau County Action Fund. “Craig is a staunch supporter of reproductive rights and access to affordable family planning health care and comprehensive sex education programs. We look forward to working with Craig in his new role to pass legislation that will benefit the health and well being of all members of our community.”
Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York is a not-for-profit organization that engages in legislative education and electoral activity including lobbying and informational campaigns. PPANY encourages public and political support for reproductive rights and women's health care.
